  • Introduction : The mobility question in modern Singapore -- Youth and educational marginality in multicultural contexts -- Educational mobility in a multiracial city-state -- a social capital story -- The politics of racialization and social mobility amongst ethnic Tamils in Singapore -- You are normal : Contextualizing schooling experiences amongst Tamil youths -- Being Tamil in Singapore -- Conclusion : Labouring to learn.
  • "Labouring to Learn examines how social capital mediates the interactive effects of 'race and class' on educational underperformance among Singaporean Tamil youths. Utilizing biographical narratives of ethnic Tamil students, this volume posits that racialization in colonial and post-colonial Singapore structurally limits these students' access to, and activation of, institutional forms of bridging and bonding capital, greatly hindering academic mobility. Ethnic Tamil youths then turn towards investing in the more viable bonding ties with co-ethnic peer and family networks, which provide practical benefits of friendship and social support but also engenders collective articulations of 'racialized' modes of resistance that makes learning in school a laborious process further precluding them from academic mobility. The account of educational underachievement amongst ethnic Tamils contributes towards understanding social inequality in a non-liberal multicultural context where marginalization is differentially experienced across ethnic minority groups and traced to broader socio-historical contexts of migration, assimilation and minority-majority relations. Furthermore, it also articulates the utility of a social capital framework in showing how the problem of educational inequality arises and is sustained in a postcolonial context"--
