- "This book explores the development of the ideal in the various forms of art. The first part discusses the symbolic form of art. The naive unconscious symbolical, the symbolic of the sublime, and reflective symbolism are detailed. The second part examines the classic form of art. The development, ideal, and destruction of classic art are detailed. The final part of the book explores the romantic form of art. The religious circle of romantic art, chivalry, and formal independence of character are described." (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved).
- "Of the translation here presented, the first and second parts (on Symbolic and on Romantic Art, respectively) are rendered mainly from M. Charles Benard's admirably clear French version. At the same time, constant reference has been made to the second edition of the German original (edited by Dr. Hotho), and an occasional sentence or paragraph translated therefrom, where the French version seemed to be not quite satisfactory. On reaching the third part, however, it was found, on comparison, that M. Benard's variations from the original are far more frequent and fundamental than in the first and second parts. The third part (on Romantic Art) has therefore been translated direct and entire from the German, special effort being made to present faithfully and clearly the whole thought as there unfolded"--Preface.
