- Introduction: Inventing Lima * An Imperial Tale of Two Cities and One Imaginary Body * Lima es Corte: The Viceroy as Cultural Capital * The King in the City of the Kings * The Baroque Machinery of the Auto de Fe * Sainthood and Sorcery * Conclusion: Border City and Metropolis: Rethinking Lima, Empire, and Modernity.
- This study examines certain key elements of the "making" or "inventing" of Lima as Peru's viceregal capital. Through analysis of seventeenth-century ceremonies of state and local religious rituals, this book asserts that colonial Lima was culturally diverse and its rich population more integrated than historiography would suggest. -- This is the first synthetic cultural history of Peru's baroque capital city. Meticulously documented and theoretically informed, Inventing Lima significantly revises our understanding of the colonial history of Latin America and Lima's role as governor of a vast and rich domain within Spain's empire.
