Analysing online news comments about public breastfeeding using critical discourse analysis / Aimee Grant.

• This dataset exemplar focuses on the analysis of a single type of document: comments posted to online news stories. Using techniques which are suitable for a range of documents, readers will be introduced to the practical steps involved in analysing comments posted to online news stories using Critical Discourse Analysis (Fairclough and Wodak, 1997). The analysis of online content, including social media, discussion forums and online news comments, is becoming increasingly common in social research, and can provide useful insights into the causes of social problems. The analysis strategy shown here is one approach which you may consider when analysing online sources; however, the principles used are applicable to the analysis of documents more widely. The data are provided by Dr Aimee Grant from the School of Medicine, Cardiff University. The exemplar is drawn from research which analysed comments left on a single online news story focussing on a case of a breastfeeding woman being asked to leave a retail premises in the United Kingdom. The exemplar will be of most use to those who are conducting, or considering conducting, documentary analysis as part of their research.
