  • Located a few kilometers north of Clermont-Ferrand, the site of Mozac retains a rich heritage belonging to one of the oldest and most important monasteries of the Auvergne. Although the site is renowned for its Romanesque treasures and sculptures, it is also of interest to the visitor to see the preserved abbey church and several buildings of the monastery, surrounded by a park of four hectares. After a history of ancient research and an update on recent study topics on the site, this book focuses on the history of the abbey, the impact of the activity of the monks on their environment, an analysis of how the monastery contributed to shaping the landscape, to fixing the populations and the habitat, and how the territory was structured. This volume then describes all the elements that make it possible to reconstruct the monumental evolution (architecture, decoration) of the abbey and the monastic buildings, from the tenth century to the twentieth century. The role played by the abbey in the local monumental art is also approached by distinguishing the share of creation from the weight of the inheritance, while accounting for the posterity of certain parties. Archeology, applied to the preserved monument, also makes it possible to highlight the diversity of materials and construction techniques used in the Middle Ages during successive works. Most of the archaeological elements concerning monastic buildings and lapidary collections are unpublished. The numerous illustrations reproduced in this book show the variety and importance of the heritage still visible, and at the same time cover its scientific interest.
